Just got my 23andme ancestry composition. It says I am a fraction of a percent for a few different ethnicities. Notably .8% African, .5% Balkan, .3% Finnic, .1% North African. Are all of these just considered noise or do any actually have substance? What would .8% African even mean as far as ancestors? For those interested the rest is mostly British Isles, French, German and Scandinavian.

.8% would be 1/128. So that's a great great great great great grandparent.

If it shows up in the conservative view I'd say it's not noise. And yes, those are very small percentages, but even .1% would be equivalent to a full North African ancestor who lived in the 1700s (if it came from just 1 ancestor), so it's not that distant in the grand scheme of things.

Probably not static or noise even at the standard %.
