I live in the south, but all my heritage is from the Midwest. Will the archives in Atlanta have any info on family that would have lived in Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois etc? Or would I have to go to the archives for the Midwest?

I don't know about the archives in Atlanta, but the "National Archives" in Washington D.C. covers the whole USA.
The website for the Atlanta branches has this:
"Serves Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee."
on their page at: The National Archives at Atlanta

I guess a lot depends on what type of information you're looking for. Certainly, the archives would be helpful, but smaller, localized historical and genealogical societies may be better bets for research.
I do quite a bit of research in Wisconsin and Illinois and have collected quite a few helpful websites on my travels. What areas are you looking at?

The National Archives' branches are like the LDS Family Research centers. You request your microfilm and view it at the center. This is for national records, military records, etc. For those kinds of records you most definitely do not have to go out of state.
However, state specific records are not stored there. The state archives are here: State Archives
All the archives should have the "major" federal records, most of which are available on-line these days. After that, they'll tend to specialize in records of that specific region.
