Thought this might be kind of fun. Share your results and what you thought your ancestry was before taking the test.

I figured I was about 50/50 British and German with maybe a Native American ancestor in there somewhere. Here are my 23andme results:

Here are mine. I haven't yet been able to talk any of my brothers into testing for the Y-DNA, and our father passed away several years ago.

This is what I know from my genealogy:

Lani's side (mother):

Her father, Luis: Filipino/Spanish
Her mother, Nancy: Hawaiian/Chinese

Richard's side (father):

His father, Pedro: Basque, Spanish, Cuban, Norwegian
His mother, Layita: Puerto Rican (Spanish/Taino/African)

These are the results I've gotten from each DNA test:

NatGeo Geno 2.0:

mtDNA Haplogroup: B4a1a1

24% Northeastern Asian
22% Mediterranean
19% Southeastern Asian
13% Northern European
8% Oceanian
5% Southwestern Asian
4% Sub-Saharan African
4% Native American

Additional results from them:

3.5% Neanderthal
4.4% Denisovan

AncestryDNA:

- 1% Ivory Coast/Ghana
- 1% Africa North
- 1% Mali
- 1% Senegal

4% American
- 4% Native American

1% West Asia
- 1% Caucasus

(glad they broke the Polynesian out from the East Asian shown on all the other tests)

23andMe:

mtDNA Haplogroup: B4a1a1

45.8% East Asian & Native American
- 40.2% Southeast Asian
- 4.1% Native American

50.72% East Asia (Southeast Asian) - Malay
15.54% Middle East (North African) - Mozabite

Nat'l Geographic's Geno 2.0 Project:

Paternal Haplogroup - R-L21
Maternal Haplogroup - U5a2c4

44% Northern European
37% Mediterranean
16% Southwest Asian

"Hominid" Ancestry:

Neanderthal 1.9%
Denisovan 3.7%

According to the test the Southwest Asian component is present in every European. My closest "reference" population is Danish, even though my family should be mostly of British Isles heritage (probably Viking and/or Anglo-Saxon influence).

The Geno 2.0 Project goes back six generations:

"Our limit is six generations, which would represent around 2% of your DNA. Beyond that, we can’t be certain that the percentages are significant, and this is why you won’t see regional affiliations of less than 2%."

They also have the disclaimer:

"In some cases regional percentages may not total 100%."

Mine totals 97% Don't really know if that's material or if I should take a test from another company.

My known heritage statically would have been:

25% Italian
12.5% Norwegian
The remaining 62.5% would be somehow split between German and British (English and Scots-Irish). Since I have both on both sides, I had no way of knowing how they added up. And since German and British DNA can be difficult to distinguish, I still have no idea...

These are my admixture proportions from various sources: AncestryDNA, FTDNA, 23 and Me, and nearly all the GEDMatch options. (This link won't download anything, it's a google spreadsheet that will just display as a webpage).

As you can see, some of my Italian roots come up a little bit Middle Eastern or N. African, which is not unusual. And my proportions for British/German/Norwegian are all over the place because they are so genetically similar. So I still have no idea how my British, German and even Norwegian DNA is split up, but at least I know I'm roughly 1/3 Italian (if you add up the ones that report some Middle Eastern or African with my Italian/Mediterranean results, nearly all of reports are something like 28-38%).

Looks like I'm European!

Paternal is all from Yorkshire England as far back as I can go--1600-1700. But one line is back to northern France c.1066 and then Yorkshire after that.

Maternal is a lot of Puritans, one Pilgrim, and a few late comer Dutch and Scots Irish in the 1700s. Most were living in England around 1600.

In tracing the maternal side, I actually do get a few Dutch and French back before 1620 when they joined up with the Pilgrims.

I have no idea where the Scandinavian part comes in unless it's way back on the Yorkshire, England side since Yorkshire was always being invaded by "The Danes."

The South Asian could be that Indian up in Canada, always rumored on the maternal side. ??

Ancestry.com: 100% European with about 50% British, 25% Scandinavian, and the remainder Irish & Western European, which corresponds well with what I know of my family history.

Yeah I took the 23andme test too. Very interesting results, however I somewhat expected some of the results, but it was nonetheless surprising.

My mom is African American, and my father is Puerto Rican, so I expected somewhat high percentages of European, African, and Native American ancestries.

The results were:

46.7% Sub-Saharan African
-41.9% West African
-1.8% Central and South African
-2.9% Broadly Sub-Saharan African

40.7% European
-24.7% Southern European
--11.1% Iberian
--0.1% Sardinian
--0.1% Balkan
--13.4% Broadly Southern European
-8.7% Northwestern European
--2.4% British and Irish
--6.3% Broadly Northwestern European
-0.1% Ashkenazi Jewish
-7.2% Broadly European

9.4% East Asian and Native American
-8.6% Native American
-0.2% Southeast Asian
-0.5% Broadly East Asian and Native American

1.7% Middle Eastern and North African
-1.0% North African
-0.7% Broadly Middle Eastern and North African

And the rest was 1.5% Unassigned

I understood that the Iberian population was from the Spanish influence in Puerto Rico, and I assumed that the Sardinian and Balkan ancestries are based off of the fact that they are in the same region of Europe as Spain.

The British and Irish influence can mean two things. It is most likely based off of the racial mixing between African American slaves and their white British slave owners. However, my mom's maiden name is Murphy, a traditionally Irish surname, suggesting that an Irish indentured servant could have possibly mixed with a black slave.

I have no idea where the Jewish ancestry comes from, but since other Hispanics have taken this test, and there has been Jewish ancestry found in their results as well, so I'm guessing that Spaniards may have mixed with Jews in Europe.

The Sub Saharan African ancestry is pretty self explanatory. This obviously comes from the Trans Atlantic Slave Trade to the Americas.

The Native American population most likely derives from the Taino populations of Puerto Rico, considering the fact that my grandfather had slanted eyes and brown skin. However, it could also be from some of the Native American tribes in the US

I have no idea where the Southeast Asian comes from. My best bet is that a Spaniard may have mixed with a native Filipino person, but that is purely a guess.

And lastly, I know that the North African ancestry comes from the fact that Moors ruled over Spain for hundreds of years.

I was very happy to find out my results, hopefully this post can help others to understand the process of discovering your ancestry
