I only post information which I have read/transcribed from digitized photocopies of ORIGINAL documents.
Sounds good.
We were told by someone with document in hand, that the marriage certificate does not say Pocahontas, West Virginia. It says Pocahontas, Va. as the birth place of Mary. But there is a small town in Va. by that name as well as Pocahontas County in West Virginia.
If you saw Va. and felt it meant West Virginia (the county) and posted that, then that would have been the logical conclusion for us as well.
If your copy says West Virginia then the two documents may be different.
And a possibility that someone forgot the W. before the Va.

Mary Marish 21 single
born Pocahontas Co, West Virginia
Clerk James Dawson
The copy of the marriage license we have says Mary was born in Pocahontas County, State of Virginia. Maybe the clerk's error on the state.
We have not solved the mystery of why Mary put her last name as Marish when she was a Lovern in 1900. After her marriage to Mr. White all of their kids only knew their mother Mary Lovern White on all her documents. So, before her marriage in 1900 she was a Lovern and after her marriage in 1911, she was Mary Lovern White. But on her marriage license she was a Marish.

It is possible that one of her guardians had the surname Marish and the county clerk assumed that was her surname. It is also possible that she was a widow of a Marish. Many women use their birth surname as their middle name, no need to continue to use the Marish last name.
We are stuck in neutral. The 1900 census shows Mary was born in West Virginia. Her marriage license says she was born in Pocahontas County, Virginia. There is no such county.
The Virginia Department of S.S. did not start keeping adoption records until 1942.
They said to go the court in the county of the adoption and we do not know where she was adopted. The marriage license has some curious entries. Mingo County was hand written for the groom but was part of the form for the bride. Also, the clerk wrote W. Va. in two places and in another place where he should have written W. Va. he put Va. Unless he may have been told Pocahontas the town and he assumed it was a county in Va. or he was told Pocahontas County West Virginia and he forgot the W. He did not forget the W. in two other places on that document.
A descendant of Mary Lovern White has indicated they would like to re-pursue this search for the parents of Mary S. (Marish) Lovern White.
Interesting that the clerk for Mary's marriage to Harlan was the same clerk who handled the marriage of Mary's brother Burton Lovern. James Dawson.
Mary and Harlan married 3-28-1911 only 10 days after Burton who married in the same office 4-6-1911.
There is a new theory that Mary S. Lovern (1900 census as adopted) was the child born to another member of the Lovern household which could have been daughter Marinda (Malinda) who was old enough to bear a child. The adoption was to cover this up. In actuality Catherine was Mary's grandmother and adoptive mother.
We do have a photo of Mary when she was in her 20's. That would have been around 1911-1919.
Time line for Mary's names:
birth: Mary ?
1900 Census: Mary S. Lovern
The day before she was married: Mary Marish as she shows as single on the marriage license but she does not use Lovern as her maiden name = ?
The day after she was married: Mary Lovern White and the name "Marish" was never on any other document after the marriage in 1911.
Also there is the mention of Astroria Hungary being her father's birth place. There is an Astoria Hungary in addition to Austria.
In may be that a Hungarian young man and one of Catherine's daughters gave birth to Mary and she was adopted into the Lovern household.
Why would she call herself a Marish on her marriage license but the day after marriage she was Mary "Lovern" White and not Mary Marish White. Respect for Catherine's surname?
Mary Lovern White and husband Harlan named one of their daughters "Mary Lovern White" so again showing respect or appreciation to Catherine Lovern.

As to the name, Marish. . .it's probably a corruption of Mares.
Austria-Hungary was ruled by the same family who ruled Spain. 1/4 of my genealogy came from the Eifel region of Germany, which was once part of the Spanish Netherlands. Many names from that region also show up in the Austrian-Hungarian empire.

Do you speak Hungarian? All of my family is over there, I don't speak Hungarian.

No, why would I speak Hungarian? What does that have to do with what I posted?
