Hi

we're related on our father's side. The question is between which of the two brothers.

Just do an autosomal test like Family Finder with Family Tree DNA or 23AndMe. Are any of the parents available for testing?
Hi

we are going a sibling test because information came to light that they may not be my cousins but half-siblings related through our perhaps shared father.

It's like, why pay all that money for a junker, when you can have a new Ferrari for less money?

23andMe is also very accurate but their price went up to $199. AncestryDNA is $99 and predicts relationships but does not give you any actual data comparisons--for that you can upload the results to Gedmatch for free. The best deal I think is FamilyTreeDNA FamilyFinder test for $99, they give you the data. You and your relative will each need to buy separate kits no matter which company you use. The prices I mentioned are per person.
Hi.
thanks for your reply.

this is something I'm beginning to discover about this test. we took this test quickly after finding out new history of our connections as cousins or half-siblings if true, through some oral history that was passed on to us by a very old aunt.

Probably we acted to quickly and this was the only local testing facility and test that we were at the time aware of.

It, and the company, may not be a direct scam. But it's very close.

we did a second exact test (more money for them) and although the results and numbers were exactly the same. the company paperwork was inconstant in some parts compared to and the overall analysis was absolutely contradictory.

going to to try FTDNA.

Do the autosomal test through one of the genealogy testing services. Family Tree DNA Family Finder is $99 per person right now. It can tell you whether the amount of DNA shared by the two people is consistent with a half sibling or a cousin.

Y-DNA will not help. Brothers have the same Y chromosome.

It's not necessarily that clear though. It's easy to tell full sibling from half sibling because of the base pairs with full matches but with half sibling vs 1st cousin, you can only go off of the total amount of DNA shared. It's possible for them to share an amount that is somewhere half way between 1st cousin and half sibling, which means it could go either way.

Yes, but numbers closer to the average for either a first cousin or a half sibling would be suggestive.

In addition, transferring the results to GEDmatch could be helpful.

Half Sibling vs First Cousin Match . Previous Posts (2780) . AncestryDNA

"Ancestry's test will typically predict half siblings in the 'close family-first cousins' bucket. My mom's first cousin shows up in the '1st-2nd cousins' bucket although when you dig into the details it does predict her as a first cousin. As Jeff said you need to take both of your data over to GEDMatch--a half sibling typically would share enough more DNA with you vs a first cousin that a comparison done there should be able to distinguish in most cases. If you look at this web page*, half siblings will share (on average) ~1700 cM of DNA (note that this amount would be the same for an aunt/uncle, so you won't be able to distinguish half sibling vs aunt/uncle), vs first cousins only share on average ~850 cM. Of course there's a range around everything so you might end up in a gray area in the middle, but there's a good chance you can distinguish based on the GEDMatch one to one comparison."

Suggestive, yes, but not necessarily conclusive. I have seen posts on other forums by people who share almost exactly half way between the two numbers - so ~1275 cM.
