When everyone is named William or Thomas or Mary or Sara it can get confusing.
Unusual names can be helpful, though.
You said it! That's exactly why I'm stuck with James William ________of Hipperholm. (Yorkshire.)
There are a lot of them and I have no way of knowing which one is mine.
In one of my lines, the parents had 9 children. One little girl was Mary Jane. She died in a house fire around age 4 (very early 1800s). When her brothers had children, each named a daughter for her. My great great grandmother was one such Mary Jane.
In another line, my great grandfather's first and middle names were the maiden names of both his grandmothers. I didn't know this until we broke through 2 more generations back of him. It actually helped us figure out a family line! Very glad his parents had this foresight to persevere a link to his ancestors.
william is a name used dozens of times in variations of my family tree .. i am William Robert the 3rd ..
