Hello all. My birth mother died 10 days after my birth due to labor complications. My father and I never had a good relationship and while growing up he never gave me any information about her except a for a few old photos. Everything was such a secret with him. Where or who can I contact to at least find out where she is buried, the name of gravesite, obituary, etc.? This has really been on my heart lately and would like to visit her gravesite. The year was 1971 and the state is N.Y. Thanks in advance for any information provided.

Find a grave might help if you know her name
County death certificate?
SS index?
Do you know the religion? Churches in the county might have an idea

I am sorry. I hope you find her

I tried that site with no such luck. She wasn't a U.S. Citizen. My father met her while he was in the Air Force stationed in England. She was Catholic. All I have is her full name and birth date from my birth certificate. The county was Clinton County, upstate N.Y. Knowing him, he just probably had her buried wherever it was convenient for him unfortunately. Thanks.

With the information you have you will probably be able to find where your mother died. As her name is on your birth certificate you will be entitled to a copy of her death certificate. That will indicate to which funeral purveyor her body was released, and (if the info is not on the death certificate, which it sometimes is) they will tell you where she is buried.

All of the above is true in Maine and Vermont, at least. I hope it is in New York.

If you'd like to pm me her information I'll be happy to try to find out where she died, which will get you started.

Good luck! This quest is eminently do-able!

It's usually on the death certificate. https://www.health.ny.gov/vital_records/death.htm

You may be able to contact the library in that county and ask for an obituary lookup.

You might also consider expanding your search to UK records. A good starting place would be:

Start a Free Trial

Also, you might find something about her in a newspaper article, either in the US or in England (if you are interested in more than just finding her burial location). This web site helped me in my research, and it looks like it carries newspapers from both the US and England:

https://www.newspapers.com/map/

Newspapers.com had a free trial as well when I used the service.

Please let us know how your search goes, because there are other resources many of us know about that may help.

The "Start a Free Trial" link goes to the UK site for Ancestry.com. I thought this would show up in the link, but it didn't.
