No, the woman had the same exact name as she did when he last saw her 30 years ago. He was relatively sure she lived in northern CA. Her name is not common, and he knew her age. Most of us could have found her in a few clicks.
Well if you mean the Bay area there are 18 million people here alone, more people than almost every state in the US in this region alone. Easier said than done.

I keep running into people who just don’t want to do the footwork. They whine and whine even when I outline the steps they need to take to access what they need. They want someone to do it for them.

I'd happily do it if they paid me for it, but everyone wants everything for free these days.
Between Ancestry, Newspapers and a few free online data bases, I found two cousins that my wife did not know existed and addresses to contact them. It took about 2 hours. I could have taken longer for a TV program if they were paying me.
Same is true with "History Detectives." They run all over the place looking for clues instead of going to the direct source for an answer.
Yeah, I’m a little disappointed there, too. But they have a tangible object in most cases. This is like Antique Roadshow collides with Geneaology Roadshow.
My feeling is that most of these people are a bit older and don't seem to be aware that they probably could have done a bit online research and found these people on their own!
