I'm not quite sure what to call it, but I would like to have my DNA mapped to see where my ancestors came from. I see several websites that claim to be able to do genetic testing, but is this really true? I'd like to find out where in Africa/Asia/Europe my ancestors are from. I'm actually really excited. Would I just be wasting my money?

Yeap the science is very good on this Kinkytoes as it's called Ancestrial DNA as they usually have you spit in a vial and then analyse the DNA which comes from your father (Y-Chromosome) and your mother (Mitochrondial DNA) ancestrial lines going back 1000's of years as their Genes carry certain DNA markers that every different groups/tribes/races of people who's ever lived on the earth have in their DNA so they can then learn what different groups or races you belong too.

I see Ancestry..com now has the test for 79 dollars (used to be $1000's then $100's of dollars as the price is dropping). Heck i may even do this now as 79 dollars is inexpensive.

They have alot of info about it.

Looks like with this kit, you have to choose testing between maternal mitochondria and the Y chromosome -- either that or getting two kits.

Of course, if you want to know where you came from millennia ago, the answer is the mitochondria test.

I was shocked that the cost had gone down so much. Last time I read about it, it was around $600.

Ive looked into the National Geographic one. Not only is it fun and interesting, but the data gets used to refine the map and for research purposes. Its a very basic test and just gives general information, not specific countries or details.

As the map is refined maybe it will lead to more precision, but just don't expect to find out what city/country your family came from generations ago. Look into it for what to realistically expect so you won't be disappointed by your investment.

I think NG defines groups. We may find we are from Mongolian ancestors.

I was under the impression that it is most effective if a male and female child of the same parents both get the test, For example if my sister orders the mitochondrial test, and I order the Y-chromosome test. Or, wouild I get the same results if I ordered both tests for myself?

Just by yourself is good enough.

It sounds like some of you may be interested in DNA Tribes and their autosomal DNA analysis.

I've also had my mtDNA done by National Geographic.
