I am having allot of problems trying to trace my Grandmothers lineage, she is Modoc and was born on the Klamath Reservation in the 1890's, there is no birth record. All I have is the stories she would tell me when I was younger. After the Modoc Indian war in the 1870's the Modoc Indians were split up some went to the Quapaw reservation in Oklahoma and some stayed in Oregon. My Grandmother never knew her father, she said he died when she was only a year old and her mother allowed her to go with a missionary around the age of 8, there is no information on who or where these missionaries were, at least my grandmother couldn't remember, she remained in the Klamath Falls area and married my Grandfather in 1915. On their marriage certificate all that is listed is her first name.

Terry, have you tried the Klamath tribe to see if they have any old records of missionarys? Also, try the local paper around that time there might be something there, Check with the BIA to see what records they might have of that time. Please let me know what you tried...my screen name is ReturningWest and you live where I want to return I miss Oregon badly.

I've tried the Klamath tribe no records, in fact they have very few records of that time. I'll try and do some research with the Klamath Falls newspaper like you suggested, maybe something will pop up.

Yes, I was born in Central Oregon and raised in Southern Oregon, my family has been here in Oregon since the mid 1800's, at lest on my grandfathers side, my grandmothers family has been here forever. I can understand why you miss Oregon, I love it here, wouldn't want to live anywhere else.

That was a direct ancestor of mine, according to my mom and mamaw (mamaw, for those that don't know - it's a southern and Appalachian area term for grandma or granny). Many, many times I had crossed the Redbird River in Clay County, Ky., on Daniel Boone (now Hal Rogers) Parkway, and did not know river was named after an ancestor of mine, I thought up til I was about 15 years old simply named after cardinals, or red birds, in the trees. Now everytime I cross that river, I try to imagine by great-great-etc.-Grandpa running around that area!
