This must be the weirdest cause of death I've ever come across:

"Rupture of the bowels, accidental penetration of a broom stick thru anus 7 1/2 inches, peritonitis followed by gangre".

It's then written over with a different pen saying "handle of a pitch fork" and then "jumped on pitch fork".

This was in 1913. The deceased was nearly 20 years old. I'm wondering if he and his brothers/friends were maybe in a barn jumping into haystacks or something and didn't realize there was a pitch fork in one of them. Still, to land on it right up the bum is quite coincidental.

That's got to be the most embarrassing cause of death I've heard of! It might even beat autoerotic asphyxiation.

Yeah, that's pretty wild, PA2UK. Ouch. Nasty way to go.

The saddest in my own tree was a 2 year old first cousin whose father worked in the railyard in the 1930s (looooong before I was born). She somehow slipped away from her parents and, according to the death certificate, was crushed and decapitated by a moving train.

I'd hate to be the coroner in that situation. Hell, forget the coroner - the parents. And Aunt M was pregnant at the time, too. I would have lost my mind. Yikes.
