Hi -

Any of you doing genealogical work in the Carribbean or eastern South America or Gulf of Mexico regions, have you encountered the term "Mulatto Rouge"? I have, primarily in late 18th century slave records in Louisiana.

Since the term Mulatto is used for some individuals, and Mulatto Rouge is used for other individuals in the same grantee grantor indexes, I've been assuming that Mulatto means half African, half European, while Mulatto Rouge means half African, half Indigenous. But I'm not sure.

I'm not having luck finding a clear definition of the term "Mulatto Rouge" on-line, so I'd appreciate any advice!

Thanks!

Oooo, excellent source! Thank you! A skim does indicate that the term may well mean a person with mixed Indigenous ancestry.

Any other ideas are still welcomed. I'd still like to know if the term has been found in the wider Caribbean/Gulf of Mexico region, since this is also a Louisiana source.

Leads me to believe that since an "Os Rouge" is defined as 50% negro and 50% indian.. That perhaps a mulatto rouge would be some lesser combination of the two.

Say a mulatto mother and indian father or vice versa.

So, you're kinda looking at 25% black, 25% white and 50% indian or some mix like that.

The child of a black and mulatto would be a griffe

Certainly not saying I'm an expert and I'm right, just.. That's what it looks like to me. And forgive the terms, i'm just using what they used for simplification.

There really is no end to how we label groups of people.

So, those terms from the past.. People now SELF identify as a multitude of things as well.

There were two really good Bloom County comics about this.. One of them I can find..

https://blog.simplejustice.us/2021/0...ople-of-color/

the other I can't, but Steve Dallas and his mother are going through all the "PC" terms for people and at the end he asks her "So, what am I?" and she replies back with "Unmarried at 30".

Wish I could find that other one.

No forgiving needed from me at least. It's simple but says it. We weren't alive back then when they used various terms.
