I'm new to genealogy, not really into it, just nipping around the edges. I found a link here to old draft records, and found my grandfather, his draft application for WWI. It sent a shiver down my spine, there he was, his name, birthdate, his employer, he got a deferrment due to his employment, I can order a copy of the actual application which I'm doing.

Wow, did he ever think when filling out the application that almost 100 years later his grandaughter would find it? Now I see the thrilll of genealogy!

Did you know your grandfather? I always have mixed feelings about finding such impersonal records about people I knew and loved (ie, my grandparents). I find it more exciting to find records about the ancestors I didn't personally know - it's a glimpse into the life of people I don't know but have a connection with.

Oh, yes, I knew Grandpa well! He lived near us and was a part of my everyday life. I'm finding I can trace him by back pedelling the stories he used to tell, I know his history, past employers, places lived, etc. Its interesting to find him again!
