Default Capt. Charles Gatliff book

Today on eBay I saw the book "Capt. Charles Gatliff" by Ruth Gibbs Hart. It has been out of print and not available. He has been the key person for many to get membership in the DAR and SAR.

No, I meant why is the book important to that? Also, even though it's out of print, if it's digitized on Google, that may not be so big a problem.

Oh, O.K. It's important because if someone interested in the SAR and DAR can fined their family in that book they know they are eligible and once they get the documentation to prove that eligibility they can apply. And it's highly unlikely it will ever be digitized.

Thanks, I was trying to be helpful, because there are frequent queries on the genealogy forums asking about it's availability.

I hate to be the only wet blanket at the beach party, but please do not pin your hopes on any book unless it is the famly bible. Let me be clear. The wonderful old books of late 18th & early 19th centuries may be goldmines of accurate wonderful information, but those old books might also be a great farce and not useful at all.

There is a state historical encyclopaedia that claims my ancestor was part of Robin Hood's band of robbers that stole from the rich to the poor. Another claims my ancestress was baptised with a name that was not only not related to her family, it NOT adopted by her uncle's family until 30 years after she died (mistaken identity). A thrid claimed a farmer with 6 children paid to transport more than 60 passengers from Europe to the colonies in thje 1700s. It was on a private ship to boot! A fourth quite solemnly declares my ancestor was born 100 miles from the proven place of birth in the wrong century. A well recognized old author had this to say about brothers, "I am sure these famiiies are related but I don't know how. " I met one perosn who tried to claim a kinship to me based on the fact her grandmother was a niece of the man who married my mother's aunt.

I swear these relationships grow more peculiar with every new/old book that is discovered on ebay. The books may be awesome reference material, but they are not "source" material. it is up to you to verify any or all sources you find that are not in the family bible.

Excellent advice, however, I think what ASlim is saying is that the book is recognized by the DAR and SAR as being correct (I don't know if that's true or not), and that you on your own would need to document your connection to individuals in the book. I'm not a member of one of those orgs so am not sure what their rules are or how reputable are their recognized sources.
