Hello, so my fiance was just transferred to San Diego, CA from St. Louis, MO. He is flying there on Sept. 1st because that is when he starts the new job. I however can't leave until Sept. 20 because I'm committed to a wedding on Sept. 18. We have a dog and 2 cats, they are all small enough to fly in the cabin but being by myself I can't do 3 animals. All solutions point to driving, but that sounds completely nuts. I'm open to suggestions and any tips on traveling by car with 2 cats will come greatly appreciated because I'm totally stressing!
Have you checked into Pet Airways? They are exclusively for pets. Their routs are limited, I don't know if they go your direction, but might check into them.

If they are small enough to fit in the cabin, would you be able to pay for someone to fly with you round-trip? I am not sure of the price of the ticket. It might be cheaper and much less stress. I will be most likely driving from Phoenix area to NC with a dog, cat and 10 year old.

When travelling across country, get a vet to subscribe a mild tranquilizer. Actually that's just advice from friends, we didn't use them with ours. The cat quieted down after a couple hours and I was grateful to stop and walk the dog every few hours.
There are motels/hotels that will allow pets along the way, look them up.
Can you split the pets? He takes the cats, you take the dog or the other way around. If not I would give it a test run, load all the pets in the car, take a couple hour drive and see if you can stand it. We have siamese and the first few hours they feel the need to talk (yell) at you until they get tired and fall asleep. We've moved with dogs and cats before and try to take 2 cars, we don't crate our pets so the cats always try to escape when the dogs want to take a walk. Our cats will not use the litter box in the car so we try to keep a days drive to about 8 hours and then get into a hotel and very quickly unpack the litter box. I'm not a big fan of tranquilizers unless you have given them to your pet before, don't want to be in the middle of nowhere and have a medical problem. Best of luck!
Am I allowed to post links from other sites here? On the Ebay community boards- in the Animals section- there is a long discussion with some great tips on just this topic- if you can't find it I can put a link for you.
I recommend sending the cats with your husband & then you can fly with the dog when you go down. The cats won't be too hard for him to handle by himself. Just cat liter, food & water & he won' have to worry about having to take them out to potty. And that leaves you with the 1 dog instead of 3 animals to take care of during the plane ride or long car ride.
But if that's not an option then go ahead. Drive. People do it all the time. It may make for a stressfull, long, & loud few days but that's all it is, a few days and then it's over & you'll be one big happy family again. Good luck on your move with whatever you decide to do.
I'm surprised no one has suggested this... you could all move together, and then just fly back for the wedding.
I was hoping to do this but I will be finishing business up myself and just can't leave any sooner.
