Maybe its information overload

We had narrowed down to 2 places and made further calls only to find out each has to be crossed off because of job/program freezes. One is statewide so even a different town wouldn't work. We had planned to move in a few months.

I'm stressed and weary of trying to figure it all out - the "must haves" , "can live with" details. Crime stats, COL, present jobs, future jobs, housing, transportation, airports, train stations, cultural amenities, family friendly...and so on.

I firmly believe no knowledge is wasted so it isn't a total loss.

I'm torn between having a 2 day movie-thon at home or just tossing a dart into a map and going (like those pre-internet days).

There have to be some of you out there feeling overwhelmed, even temporarily. How are you coping?

Perhaps your stress is created by your own (understandable) impatience to have the decision behind you. Is there a hurry, or a deadline of some kind? What is unsatisfactory about the town or city where you now live? Is there some way to just relax about the whole thing for a while and focus on enjoying life in the here and now? Stop beating yourself up because you "had planned to move in a couple of months" and you may not make this timeline goal. Job markets are tough almost everywhere and will probably stay that way for the near-term future. If you have a job, be thankful and rejoice. You've got to be kidding about tossing a dart - what a recipe for disaster!

EscortRider - I think you have a point, I am impatient. I spent time researching and thought I was all over that part. Our rental has been having some problems that aren't being dealt with, and one of us has been having health problems since we moved here (mold or being next to a power plant..possible reasons), gotten worse in the past month. I have a month-to-month lease and if we stayed in the area it would be a year lease. I like my job but hate the shift and I've hanging on so I can transfer. I might have to work the same shift awhile in the new place but at least I could move on to a a better shift at some point - won't happen here unfortunately. So, I guess those things do make me want to speed up the process.

Yes I was kidding about the dart - it has been hinted that I really do toss a dart when I've made other moves. I've met people who genuinely think anyone who moves out of state just pack and go without any investigation or reason and figure you're the ... irresponsible kind.

Midwestern mom~My husband and i moved from the midwest about 6 years ago to the West coast. We didnt know anyone, just felt we needed a change. We are now making our last move (long story) after a lot of research, we picked the city/state we are moving to. I think that this is not for everyone, not everyone has the inner sense, just knowing that things work out~they just always do If dart throwing for you works, then by all means do it Good luck to you

Midwestmom - I'm in a similar situation as you! I've wanted to relocate out of Denver for the past year. (I've lived here on and off since 1993.) I'm currently unemployed, single, no kids with a decent amount of savings. I dislike where I am for many reasons - it's cold, it feels stale here, I've done everything fun there is to do, I find the people unfriendly and snobbish, I like a city with nightlife and it's seriously lacking here, no one likes to dress up; basically mediocrity runs rampant in this isolated cow town.

I'm originally from Chicago and have lived in Florida, Cali, Colorado, Nevada and Italy. I want to live in a happening place and originally was basing my decisions on a state with nice weather. I considered Phoenix - but discovered in my research that the job market is every bit as terrible as Las Vegas (where I was laid off) and visited 3 times this past year. I do not know a soul there, but I'm an outgoing person and know I could make it happen...I adore the desert climate....

I've also considered Dallas because there's no snow (I know there's occasional snow, but it's very rare), it's a large metropolis with a lot going on, cheaper cost of living, better wages and a better economy. I visited once this past year. I wasn't super impressed and didn't see the sun once while I was there. But I also left knowing there were some more spots to explore...and felt the people were very friendly and nice. Does this outweigh the rain and humidity there?

Lastly, many, MANY people suggest I return home to Chicago. My famiy and I moved out when I was 13, but I've been back every year to visit extended family since. I know Chicago has a lot going on, I know many people there, but I don't know if I can endure the brutal weather. I get seasonal affective disorder - I NEED sunshine! I have been in limbo like this for the past year and am annoyed that I can't make a decision or know what I'm willing to sacrafice. If I had my way, I'd still be happily working in Las Vegas, living it up! But life doesn't always go the way we want it, so I've got re-evaluate and having one of hell of a time with myself! It's frustrating! Anyone who reads this with advice, it's welcome!

I think after you're finished with your research, it just comes down to gut instinct.
For example even if a particular place seemed perfect statistically, but in the end, just didn't feel right to you.... you're probably better off not choosing it. Research is definitely useful and people would be silly not to utilize the internet in this day and age, because people weren't always able to just jump on the computer find this stuff out. But I think heart has to win out over head in the end.
