NC to Texas...roughly twice a year on average since 2000...but I'm single, no kids. Used to be able to do it for under $200 but this last Christmas it was over $425. Plus baggage fees. Plus parking/taxi. Still beats a 2 day drive (which I have also done).

You need to fly Southwest- I go from Philly to Seattle 3-4 times a year and have NEVER paid over $225.-Just keep monitoring the site.

Which "coast" is Minnesota on anyway".........?

CA - VA
The children went 1-2 times per year. I did not get back for over 10 years. I found it cheaper and newer experiences to fly out of the country yearly
as well as drive to states close by.

It helped that folks from CA often fly here.

It is expensive. So, can people come visit you? Use skype on your computer to stay connected. Maybe one of you can take more time off of work than the other, and drive with the kids, while the other flys up for a weekend, or can drive one way back. I looked at the prices for Christmas this year, and just flat out said "not going to happen"...they jack up the prices so crazy...it is not worth it. I will wait until it is less expensive.

Ha, you think that is bad? Try getting tickets from Florida to Alaska. We just moved here in August and DW is already talking about making a trip up there to visit this summer. (family of 5, tickets are about $650 ea for mid June) I have no desire to make the trip, so we'll see if I can talk her out of it. I would rather spend the money checking out the region we already live in.

I would ultimately like to go visit home every other year or every other 2 years. Its too expensive, and way too long of a flight. Been there, done that. I would like to see some other stuff in my lifetime. Our family can come down here and visit us in winter. It gets them out of the cold and there is plenty to do in this vacation destination state we live in now.

One way to help with travel costs is I got a US Air Visa and I bank dividend miles for free tickets. I use it to pay bills, and anything else that will take visa. I've been doing this since we started talking about our move and have already earned two free tickets. I figure by the time we live in FL I'll have enough for 3 maybe 4. In the meantime for our trips now, I book travel around the cheapest tickets possible so I can save my dividend miles for the times I can't get a cheap ticket.
