So, I was moving my furniture out of my apartment and into a moving truck, and my neighbor asks me if I am moving out. We see each other at the mailbox often, so she is not a new face.

I tell her no, I am moving in, and then she looks at me stupidly, and returns to her apartment.

Sometimes, I give stupid answers to stupid questions. How about you?

Sometimes people just ask seemingly stupid questions to start a conversation with another person.

Exactly misplaced1 - a conversation starter. Kinda like when the weather is gorgeous and I see my neighbor outside, I say to him "Sure is a nice day to be out doing XYZ"
Normal people don't think you are stupid for being friendly and social, making "small talk". DrEarth might not be someone I'd appreciate as a neighbor with that attitude.

"No, I'm ripping the place off."

I've never seen my neighbors, nor they me. So they wouldn't know what I looked like in the first place.

Yes, I am aware of small talk, and have no problems with it.

However, the lady had a year to make small talk with me, and did not. So, why bother now when I will never see her again. Thus, my response.

Anyway, I thought it was funny, and that's all that matters.

If you act the same live, as you have here, I'm not shocked you didn't make friends in a yr.
