In my opinion, the best idea so far is to package things in groups and put a price on each group. Make it clear that they buy the entire group or nothing. You're not going to take one item out of the group and sell it separately. They buy the entire group or nothing.

Yes, I've sold a few (very few) items on Craigslist, but it was only when I was doing it pretty much for the entertainment value or on general principles. I sure don't have the time or patience to list hundreds of items, take pictures of each item, put a price and description on each item, and then dicker over a $10 item.

If a person has plenty of time on their hands and wants to dicker over whether a used coffee maker should be sold for $3 instead of the $5 asking price, then have at it. Been there, done that, got the tee shirt. Not interested in doing it again. However, I MIGHT offer a bedroom suite, living room set, or complete den furniture as packages and then dicker on the price of the package. Not interested in haggling over $2 on minor stuff. I'd rather gather it up and give/donate it to someone.

BTW, very few people get to deduct charitable contributions anymore because the standard deduction is so high now for most people that itemized deductions simply don't make sense. Give things away because you feel like being generous, not because you'll get something back from the IRS... because you likely won't.
