I'm so frustrated. We're moving soon--a job popped up for my husband. We're really psyched about moving but we CANNOT find anywhere vacant that will rent to us because we have a "midsized" dog (she's @50 lbs. and a lab, not a dangerous breed).

So I need ideas. What do you guys suggest I do? I have contacted a bunch of complexes..either they say NO DOGS, that dog is too big or we just take cats or no pets..

Apparently rental houses and apartments are hard to come by in good areas, so I am stuck what to do next.

Do you think maybe my husband's future employer could help us out (we're relocating from out of the area).

Any ideas are welcome.

Have you tried posting in the city/state specific forum on this site? You might come across someone who has had to do the same search or knows people renting with pets.

Do you have someone who could watch your dog until you can find a place that rents pets? Is renting a home an option?

If you are truly desperate, have you tried asking the places that do rent to dogs if you could just put down a bigger pet deposit or pay a little more in pet rent to make up for it?

Good luck, I'm sure there has to be somewhere that will rent to you!

Animal shelters in the area may keep lists of pet friendly apartments. To find a shelter go on Petfinder.com, and on the left of the page, just below the pet search, is a search for shelters in or near a zip code you enter.

You may have to expand your idea of what a "good" area is.

You never know! Sometimes we write off areas, for various reasons, but if you really look you can often find streets, or sections that are just fine. And personally, I'd do just about anything to keep a pet with me - even if it meant living in an area that wasn't initially my first choice.

I have faced the same thing, and kept looking. Finding a pet-friendly place is an absolutely non-negotiable condition for me.

Offer a hefty pet deposit, and also to sign something that says upon vacating the unit you are entirely responsible for any damage you pet may cause, and extra cleaning too.

I know some places say no dogs at all, but for the ones which accept dogs but have a weight limit, offer something that will show you are a responsible owner and will always take full responsibility for your beloved pet.

When I moved to Phoenix, I had a dog and 3 cats. I found a house rental, but only told them about the 1 dog and 1 cat ( I told the other 2 to not be conspicuous, ha). But, it's possible;I would have never moved without them. Just keep trying--you'll find the right fit.

I am facing the same situation with cats. So far, I have not been able to decide where to move because of it and am between three specific places, (two general areas). Although I have been to each of the areas I am not very familiar with them.

I am considering staying in an extended stay like the Courtyard and boarding them for a month, while I look. I am considering offering to pay six months rent in cash in advance. I am considering buying a condo sight unseen.

My cats are good cats; not destructive, and are neutered, vaccinated, microchipped and registered. Of course all this means nothing if the landlord is in a market where there are plenty of prospective tenents without pets.

The Humane in the area where I am now has a great website for pet friendly apartments. But the shelters in one of the areas I like-they won't even respond to my emails and/or calls about it. I realize they are busy but it seems sour to me, even though I have offered a donation for advice.

In my searching I have come across some very nice (on web sites anyway) boarding for dogs, with "country club" type themes. BTW it is much more difficult to find nice boarding for cats-so many times they are stuck in cages.

You are going to have to rent a house instead of an apartment or condo and not be in a complex. We are moving to Florida too next month and had to do some searching but houses are out there that will accept pets. We have two dogs and found a nice property. Call a property management company or realty that deals with rentals. Several even had fenced yards and welcomed pets. You can PM me if you want and I can give you some of the companies we had looking for us.

It might help if we knew where you are moving to ? I have lived all over the country with animals and in apt complexes and never had to give up an animal . So maybe if you could let the good folks here on cd know where you are moving we might be able to help .

I'm having the same issue currently. The biggest issue besides the "NO PETS" is the weight limit. I have a great dane who will be six this year and its tough finding a place to rent that will take him. Even when I mention our diplomas for obedience courses and his canine good citizens.
