I'm moving this summer and will be renting in my new city.

I'll be traveling there in early june to find a place and plan to sign a lease while I'm there.

I know I need proof of employment...should I go ahead and have a credit report to take with me? Will that save time or will they want to run one on their own?

I have no idea how this works...I own my own home now so obviously the mortgage co. did my credit checks in the past.

I have excellent credit, that isn't a worry for me.

Some landlords ask you to bring a copy of your credit report. Most want to run their own. Running it themselves means they can ensure the information is up-to-date and hasn't been altered. Honestly you can get a credit report online in a matter of minutes, if you need to, so I wouldn't worry to much about it in advance.

You can get a free credit report now by requesting on through one of the credit reporting agencies. Check it now to be certain there are no irregularites that need to be addressed prior to you move/rental. It is good to periodically check your credit report from time to time to be certain there are no errors and that no one has attempted to steal your identity.

My place also did a criminal background check that you will have to agree to if your potential place requires it. They just need info from you to secure both. Every place I have ever lived preferred to run their own. My place is now requiring proof of renter's insurance, too.
