Here are some ideas:

Liquor and wine boxes are unbelievably strong boxes. I just packed 20 boxes with books and other goods. Many of them also have handles. The beer boxes are not quite as good but are functional.

Walmart will provide you a lot of boxes if you are willing to show up at late hours - generally 10 pm - 2 am. We have a local guy who gets them from various Walmart stores and sells them on Craigslist.

As for NEW boxes, try ULine. They are less expensive than the Home Depot or Lowes and they deliver. There is also a quantity discount.

Also, approach recent movees. Often, they'll be anxious to have someone take away used boxes.

===============================

Do remember that whatever boxes YOU pack, you assume responsibility for the contents.

We got lots of free boxes from the movers who moved us. I did a lot of the packing, and they kindly gave us quite a few used boxes. Before that I bought standard size boxes from Home Depot. I think that the 3M packing tape on dispenser rollers works quite well. It is tough to get a good deal on that stuff, though.

We also put quite a few things in plastic lidded bins, and taped the lids down. I still have those bins, and they are in use for storage now.

We're currently packing and using the small and medium boxes from Home Depot. I looked on Craigslist, but since we live in an underpopulated area, I didn't find anything. The Home Depot boxes are really inexpensive (69 cents for the small size, which is mostly what we're using) so I'm not going to worry about it too much.

I bought a pile of boxes from one party on Craigs List. They are all professional size boxes.

I am buying heavy duty small boxes from Home Depot to pack glassware and china. I like how sturdy they are.

One thing to consider - standard size boxes stack better. This makes it less likely things will get crushed.

Call Walmart, ask them to keep the cereal boxes for you. They have large boxes used for shipping cereal, and they are perfect for moving/shipping.

We used a lot of free boxes from 3 different liquor stores. Not a bug in any of them.

Some of the boxes were very heavy duty with nice thick dividers. Great for glasses or bottles of cleaning supplies or perfume.

I originally headed to one of those "cheap, cheap box" places in the local area. What I found was that the place was the local Mayflower Moving and Storage franchise. They were selling USED moving boxes for 15-20% HIGHER than using the NEW boxes that I purchased from Menards. They were slightly cheaper than The Home Depot ***BUT*** they carry less stock so I might end up at THD.

As tempted as I am to slip down to Walmart at 1 am and pick up a hundred boxes, grocery boxes are not always the best. For example, while banana boxes appear to be great, wait until you fill one up and have to carry it down the steps.

As the moving company quotes are coming in, I am starting to wonder if I should get rid of some more stuff.
