Be ready for your kitty to be "sick" as they will throw up... its their nature.
Don't feed them for 4 hrs before your set-off time and if you can, make a long stop for an overnight stay (feed & water for the cat(s) at night but not 4 hrs before travel) at a pet friendly motel (like Redroof).

I was told to feed them the night before, make sure the tummy is empty. The really FUN part was finding where she hid, though a trailing leash was helpful. And getting the pill IN the cat when she figured out why I was trying to catch her.
Don't assume silence is 'fine' if you don't medicate. My girl didn't make a sound. I discovered she didn't since she was just to scared to. Sedating her made it easier on her.

My cat does the same exact thing THE WHOLE Time including one 3+3 hour car ride with one overnight stop in between. (But I love her still....) Anyways I just a dog crate in the back with a tiny litter box and two bowls attached to the crate. One with ice cubes and one with her favorite treats and some food. She still meows the whole time and hang upside down trying to open the crate but at least she gets to use the box and have food for the trip. Put a towel on top of the crate to block sun. Never ever open the crate unless your in a hotel room with locked doors.

I wrote a whole week of travel with "Jasper" in the cat section. A day, by day blog of our entire trip across the country.
