I too have heard that the mass transit in Portland is good and that one can get by without a car. In general whether one needs a car depends on if one is moving to a city with good mass transit or not.

I see this post was created a little over a year ago. Did it happen? I am moving later this year to Portland from California, and I'd love to see a success story.

I did not move to Portland, but I did move to Washington, DC. I got rid of my car before I moved, and lived 7 years car-free until I moved to a place where I need a car (across the country). I lived in areas easily accessible to transportation, and mos of my jobs were within 2 miles of my apt, so it was easily walkable or bike-able too. The neighborhoods I chose all were urban, with grocery shopping and everything I need within a 15 minute walk.

There were very few times I needed a car. And when if I did, most urban areas of a flex car program that works super well.

Good luck.

I wonder if the OP ever made the move. She didn't have anywhere near the money she needed saved up. I would have been surprised if she had found anyone who would have rented her a room. But it would have been nice to have heard as to whether or not she actually was successful.

Yeah, moving in itself is really stressful and had I moved to another state at the age of twenty, I don't think I would have made it. I had so much learning to do. In five years, I had plenty of roommates, moved back in with my parents, and then I lived on my own again. Now, I think I'm finally ready for the move. Well, I think I'm as ready as I'll ever be. Hopefully, I can create my own little success story.
