At some point in the near future we will be moving about 800 miles. Is there a way to estimate how much we should expect quotes to come in at? We won't have TOO many rooms of furniture....maybe three. We will probably have about 50 boxes of knick knacks (ugh), clothing etc.

Length of Trip: Central Jersey to Savannah, GA area.

Just get an estimate from a moving company. Estimates are free.

There are online estimates, you put in all your stuff, and it gives you a round amount.

All of your furnture fits in three rooms when stacked in tightly, or you have three normal rooms of furntiure.....bedroom, living room plus one more?
Movers figure out pretty quickly what you have and are very good at estimating the weight and the total cost to move. Get three estimates.

My guess, having just moved a similar distance, is that if you have a studio with three legitimate rooms of furniture, the cost will be $4,000 or so. If we are talking a whole house, but the furniture can be stacked in three rooms (the moving company doesn't care, because it goes mostly by weight), then you are probably in the $6-7,000 area.

Pure speculation without seeing what you have. Get three reputable moving companies in and go with the best one; not necessarily the cheapest one if you treasure your stuff.

Good luck. Let us know what you come up with.

Most reputable interstate movers price their service by weight and distance in their tariffs. Many of the disreputable companies and move brokers provide fixed price quotes based on the amount of estimated cube they calculate based on what you say it going. This is where many consumer run into problems!

Arrange to get three in-home visual surveys from local moving companies as soon as possible. May signals the start of the peak moving season when prices usually rise by 3-6%. Many companies have already started to talk of restricting bookings since there is 30% less driver and equipment capacity throughout the industry this year going into what is expected to be a busy summer.

Check out the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration's Protect Your Move website, and be sure to read the entire section on Your Rights and Responsibilities When You Move.
