We are moving to the east coast in July. We will be taking a short trip in May to look a few places to live. We want to rent for a year to get the feel of the area before we buy but and I am not sure exactly how should go about finding a rental home. Do we contact a realtor?
I have only used a realtor to purchase a home, never rent. Also, we are not exactly sure which town we want to live in. We have a three towns on our list and only a few days to look at them. Just not sure if I should look up places on Craigs List or similar websites, or if there is any easier way to see multiple properties in a short period of time. Help!
just Google the Craigslist at your destination and start searching for what you want under housing..
As an Example heres the Craigslist for Boston. http://boston.craigslist.org/
One thing that we did in that situation, call a local church of yuor denomination. Ask for the pastor, but anyone can probably help you. Introduce yourself, tell them you are moving to the area and ask for suggested locations. That way you get input from somone with no self-interest, but who also does nto want to steer you wrong, since they will probably know you later. If they do not know, they can usually get someone to talk to you.
Go online to the newspapers in the areas you're interested in, they list rentals. Also, you can Google 'property management' in the towns as well as they list available rentals.
Get started by finding a realtor in you new area now. Establish that relationship, have them show you some homes during your visit in May. A good realtor will be just fine with this, but don't abuse their time too much.
Ask that realtor about rentals. They can make suggestions and sie DO handle rentaks (and can earn a small commission if you rent through them.)
Then, do the RIGHT thing and be loyal to the realtor, and use them as your buyers agent when you are buying a house.

Also get a couple from friends in you new area or here on cd (PM only.) interview each of them by phone.

I actually put in an ad in Craigslist for a realtor for finding me a place in Florida. Worked out great for me. And he was a great resource, and help to me, in a place where I did not know anyone.
These are some great ideas. I have a realtor's site that I have been stalking homes on. I will get in touch with her and see if she can show me some rentals and if not if she knows anyone who can.
I never thought to hit Craigslist with a request. I will give that a try if the other realtor doesn't work out.
Thank you!
rentals.com and realtor.com are also great resources... with fewer incidences of fraud than CL.
We did these moves back in the days before the internet... it's sooo much easier now. Relax... this is easy.
