I moved out when I was 20 and engaged, a couple of months before the wedding. In 1981, this was still taboo in our neck of the woods - living together (even if it was right before the wedding).
Man, I feel sorry for those of who who had parents who felt they had no love or obligation to help you after turning 18 and cast you to the wind. I'm 32 now and my folks still enjoy supporting me and my sister financially or otherwise if we need the help.
Moved out at 25 when I bought my first home. Most friends and relatives did the same. The ones that did the apartment thing did not have much in the way of family life and still do not have as much as the rest of us. Now they are pushing 60. There is no substitute for a strong family and a firm financial base.
I graduated from high school and went to visit relatives in California for a month and forgot to pay June's rent. I returned June 30 and my stuff was on the carport and the locks had been changed, so I had just turned 18.
I started paying rent to my mother when I was 15, bought all the groceries and paid all the car insurance. It was cheaper for me to be on my own.
Lived at my parents for my first year of college and lived there free no big problems other than I wanted the freedom to come and go with out calling so they don't worry and wait up. Also there was the matter of overnight guests that I would never do at my parent's house./ I was 19 and it was great-a wonderful fun time in my life.If I needed money my parents would give it to me and they paid for my college.
I went to college at 18, but moved back home when I was 25. My mom passed away when I was 29 and I lived in the house for a couple more years afterwards. It's hard times out there, there is nothing wrong with living at home (unless you're a no-good lay-about playing video games all day and night), many people in other countries live at home and have a good sense of family. But also it is very nice being out on your own.
Left home at 19 when I joined the Air Force. Only been back for short visits since 1984. Thankfully Mom comes to visit me too.
