Uhaul 17ft:$2,072 but the route we want to take would add $340 in extra mileage charges.
Penske 16ft:$2,043 unlimited mileage
Budget 16ft:$1,649 unlimited mileage
All quotes include 7 days and a car carrier.
I have used Uhaul many times in the past and have been happy with the experience. Plus they have the "mother's attic" which works great at separating fragile stuff from the rest of the load.
I have never used Penske or Budget but the unlimited mileage is interesting me. The only thing is their boxes are smaller and they don't have the mother's attic. I am also concerned if there is something their websites are not telling me. Will I regret not using Uhaul who I have experience with?
Where the heck you moving too? I am moving next weekend over 1000 miles and have a 26' truck rented from Penske for $214. With a tow dolly, insurance and tax I'm looking at around $530 total plus the cost of gas.

AZ to WI
1,900 miles
Are you doing a one way rental or are you taking it back to where you rented it?
How many days will you have the truck?
The base quote for the truck at Penske was $1,500 add the car carrier and insurance, tax... $2k+

Can you check in here after the move to tell us if they hit you with surprise charges when you returned the truck. Because that is what I've gathered from around the web about Penske and Budget.
It has been YEARS but I reserved a UHaul to bring my mother's stuff from Crescent City to Phoenix. When we got there, NO TRUCK. They told us they expected a truck but, hey - it didn't make it and they didn't shuffle trucks around. They offered a larger truck (and a HEFTY discount) but we had to go to MEDFORD to pick it up! Since my husband and son had flown up there for the move, there was no choice. Overall, I agree, I like the Mother's Attic and we've never rented anything else but UHaul- but we only do local moves now!
Just wanted to let anyone who cares that Uhaul matched the budget price and gave me the extra miles without a fight. I just called them up and 5 minutes later I had a confirmation email with the adjusted price and mileage.
The biggest issue with U-Haul is that they not guarantee if you will be able to keep the truck for extra days... With Penske I was able to reserve the truck for exact dates. Also, Uhaul gives the truck only for 6 days, and Penske default rental is 8 days.. Plus UNLIMITED miles....
In my case I need the truck for 11 days and Penske was way cheaper than UHaul.
In my experience, Penske is the best of the truck rental companies. Much better equipment than U-Haul, and they work with you if need to keep the truck an extra day or two. U-Haul trucks are ok for local moves, but I would not drive one of their trucks long distance. Some of them look like US army surplus from the '80s! Penske is the best!

Uhaul has been buying new trucks for out of town moves. The older "army surplus" ones you see around are local use only. And even those are from the independent vendors. A corporate store has 4 to 5 year old trucks for in town and practically new for out of town. My last two out of town rentals were less than 2 years old with 1 having 20k miles and the other having just 4k miles.
