Default 1500 Miles - UHaul Gas Cost?

I was wondering if anyone has done a 1200-1500 mile or so trip recently in a 16' uhaul / penske or budget rent a truck?

If so how was the gas prices on them? What kind of real world MPG did you get?

I Know they are rated at 10MPG but i just keep thinking ill rent one and end up getting somewhere in the range of 4MPG with all my crap in the back of it.

I haven't made the trip recently, but I have driven cross-country a couple times (using Penske, not U-Haul) and the predicted 10-12MPG turned out to be fairly accurate.

If you stay on the Interstate and don't brake often or floor it, the weight of the cargo doesn't have much effect on fuel economy. It's really acceleration that kills fuel economy, especially when loaded down.

I had a GMC 3500 box van that got 15mpg on the highway and that didn't change after I added an enclosed trailer, 2 motorcycles, and all the accessories.
