I am trying to help a friend solve a dilemma. A couple years ago, they had some health issues and needed to clear out of their 2BR apartment on short notice. They placed the items in storage and ultimately relocated to Alaska to be near family. They have been paying the storage fee ever since. Fast forward two years. They now know they will not be going back to Tacoma where the items are stored. They are trying to decide what the best way to either get the items to Alaska is, or how to dispose of them.

Factors to consider:

They are willing to part with most of the items, but of course would like to retrieve personal items, which are interspersed throughout the unit.

They have limited financial and time resources, so need to do it as inexpensively and quickly as possible.

The storage facility has been of no help, offering no suggestions. They essentially say it isn't their problem.

They have no friends family in the area.

They need to stop paying the storage fee ASAP

As a last resort, they'd be willing to let everything go, but there is still the question of how to make it happen (given the parameters above)

What would you advise. (General comments like sale everything or give it all away aren't helpful. Saying "how" you would do it is)

How much personal stuff will be left after clean-out few boxes? or a (Car) trailer load?
Boxes - Ship back.
Trailer (Car) - Load & Go.

Hire Clean-out Company (like Got Junk) to haul all the Junk away at end of day.

Labor - Contact one of the larger Churches in the area, and ask the Pastor if s/he can recommend a few (3-4) High School Guys who would like to pick up some Cash to help with the clean-out.

Do Nothing - Stop paying, and in few weeks we will see it on A&E's Storage Wars.

Thanks flyonpa. There will probably be a truckload of stuff after they get through pulling out the items they want. I appreciate the tip about 1-800-junk, that sounds like the easiest solution. I never knew exactly what they did. It would enable them to get in and get out quickly, although maybe not so cheaply.

A friend of ours moved from Michigan to California while putting their things into storage. After a time (probably 1-2 years later), they decided to stay in California permanently. They hired a crew from 2 Men and a Truck in Michigan to unload the storage unit into an ABF trailer (upack.com). ABF drove the trailer to their place in California and they gathered several guys with the unload. They sort through the contents, kept what they wanted and sold/donated the rest. It worked out for them even though there was lot of coordination involved. Someone needs to be at the storage place to sign off on the ABF trailer and someone needs to open the storage unit for the moving crew.
