So, today was opening an account with a national bank so we will have a 'local' bank where we are going to...at least for a while. Set service installations for Internet, DirecTV. Made arrangements for a new wheel and tire for the trailer.
But we've decided to do the big 1501 mile move! From Eureka, CA to Denver. We're aiming for October and hopefully leaving the last sunday or saturday in September. We're only moving a one bedroom apartment, no kids, two cats(I have three but my oldest is my family's cat, my brother would murder me if I took him. And I'm not sure how well he would do with the travel, he's 11), three tortoises, and two hedgehogs.
We're going to be driving our two car/trucks to Denver via Reno and I'm so nervous for that part. I'm picturing just sheer drop off mountain side cliffs because I've never driven or been east of California. I have a tiny little ford escort that I've never tested on mountain driving.
As far as the actual moving- I've got A LOT of purging to do. I'm secretly a hoarder and I'm finally sick of it. That's part of why I don't want to get a moving truck, we have to cut our possessions down to what fits in my trunk and the back of his truck. I think we're keeping out bed, two book shelves, and our entertainment shelf(hopefully I can take that apart)
We're mostly book/dvd/video game people so all of those are coming with us. I just don't even understand the mess in the rest of the house now.
After 19 days, our apartment is finally somewhat livable. Since we downsized from a large home into this 2BR apartment, it's been very interesting. Wall-to-wall furniture. Still boxes here and there. And no place to put lots of things. Our storage unit is totally full, almost to the edge. Hope we find a house before too long!!!
One thing that has really piled up is laundry!! Who has time to wash when there are SO many boxes to unpack. We even found one big black bag marked "laundry." Oops, that was the dirty bed linens from the last day in the house.
All the myriad numbers of things to do--bank, etc. still happening. We have gone out to lunch almost every day to get away from the mess. Getting expensive doing that, though LOL
Don't miss our house at all. We even walked out that last day with nary a tear. This is the first house we've owned where I didn't cry when I left. I think it was such a relief to not have the burden of taking care of that big place anymore. Looking forward to a life with less stress.
We are making a list for the first load to be taken down to FL. Always adding, but taking bulky stuff to free up the big load for easier packable stuff in the Pod.
For the most part, we are in-YAY!!!! The movers were terrible and they still haven't moved everything. The deal was, they were supposed to pack for us and then move. They started packing a couple of days before-but didn't finished. On the day of the big move, they started off with 5 people. The plan was, a couple of them were going to pack while the others loaded the truck. About midday, the big boss & one other guy left to go to another job. It was about 4 in the afternoon when we told the guys that at that point, the one item we needed for the night was the refridge. The rest of the stuff can be moved another day. The big boss came back about 5 or so. They went back to the old house to load up some more. When they came back-the refridge was NOT on the truck! Meanwhile, it is getting dark and EVERYONE was exhausted. But the big boss wanted to finish everything that day.
Come to find out most of the boxes were not labeled. As they are bringing boxes in, some of them asked, "Where does this go?" We had to open the boxes to see what was in it. I told them that it goes in whatever room. 9 times out of 10, it didn't end up in the room I told them it goes in. Some boxes were clearly marked "bedroom" and didn't even make it up the stairs. They were just dumping the boxes in two of the downstairs rooms. And they would just dump them in the middle of the room and before long, you couldn't get into the rooms because of how they were dumping them. Much of the stuff were supposed to go out into the garage but it ended up in the house. We are wondering what ended up in the garage. They FINALLY delivered the refridge at 12:30 a.m.!!!
We have spent the last two days going through all the boxes and marking them the way they were supposed to be marked in the first place. They big boss called yesterday to find out what the plan was to finish the job (we haven't paid him in full yet because the job is not complete). My hubby said that we are going through the boxes and we would like them to move them to where they are supposed to be-and the big boss did said he would make that right. He also said that this was a valuable lesson to him and he will no longer offer packing. Hopefully, in another week we can get the rest of our stuff.
Meanwhile, we pretty much have a working kitchen now-even though there are still a few kitchen boxes yet to be found (they are probably out in the garage ). Haven't been able to call the dentist yet at least my tooth doesn't hurt. But my toe is now a pretty shade of blue & purple from stubbing it on a box. The dish is up & running but the internet is not (on the wireless/laptop right now). The internet guy was here yesterday but we didn't have the computer set up to make sure it was up and running. So, now we are going to have to call them again.
If you are still reading this-thanks. Anyway, we are now in our new home-even if all of our stuff isn't. And we are pretty exhausted.
Well, I have been off a few days, doing the garage sale thing. It is over, got rid of a LOT of stuff, made some bucks. Now planning for Garage Sale II-The Sequel-Attack of the Storage Buildings.
Next week, taking the first load down.
When I had my final garage sale, I had it for 2 days and put in the Craig's List ad that after a certain time on the second day everything was half price. I got busy at that time, and got rid of a LOT. I also loaded all of the unsold directly into the car, and took it to Goodwill. None of it went back in the house. If it was out for the sale, I was not keeping it, period.

Oh cat that's terrible. But it'll make a funny story in about six months. You'll be laughing and all this will be history.
Actually, we are already laughing. It was pretty much a comedy of errors. Well, I'm not laughing about my toe or my tooth.
