I would also consider university towns. These can be small but still have all of the culture, activities, and amenities.
I just completed mine. Very interesting!! All the places I've been considering are on there, as well as some I never thought of. Decisions, decisions...

Great! Also do the one on Sperling's - I could find the link, but should be easy to find.

PS - I once had a great time at a conference in Grand Island. Good memories. I also made the local paper. I was out at dinner with other speakers, organizers, etc., at 10PM at night (after we cleared the room with our karaoke) and everyone said "how does it feel to be a celebrity?" I had NO IDEA there had been a big article about my talk in the local paper. Very cool day.
