I need to rent a moving truck on Memorial Day weekend for a cross country move, the days are non negotiable due to no vacation days at new job. We have to use 3 day weekend for drive. I am flying in a week earlier to load truck and hubby is flying in to drive truck back.
my question is this since none of the rental companies truly "gaurantee" your truck, should I make reservations with 2 different companies. Example book a Budget truck to pick up on Wednesday and then also book a Uhaul for Friday pickup. If budget doesn't have my truck I have the Uhaul to fall back on. If Budget comes through on Wednesday I have time to cancel the Uhaul Reservation. If get screwed by both of them my husband doesn't fly in on Saturday And I guess I go the upack option in June.
So has anyone did this? Book with 2 different companies to be safe?

Reserve the truck earlier than you need it. It'll give you more time to pack and more room for error. ABF has a great system for moving your belongings. I've used them twice to move across the country. They are cheaper than competitors like PODS and the physical hardware they drop off is much higher quality.

Get a ABF Upack trailer, hire a couple of guys to help load. Let ABF move you. You will save the additional air fare, cost of gas, and won't have to deal with so much hassle.

Upack is plan B at this point. The difference in cost is about $2000.It's about $1000 for the rental truck, figuring an extra $1000 for gas, hotels, ect.(hopefully it won't be near that much). Upack estimate is $4000.
