So I was planning on renting a car and driving from CA to TX and putting a bunch of boxes in my car. Unfortunately the cost to rent a car came out to $500+ due to drop off charges. I was wondering what the cheapest way to ship about 5-10 boxes would be? Is it going to come out to more than $500?

I don't have personal experience, but I have read that people sometimes get good deals shipping via Amtrak. Maybe check into seeing what they offer.

Roughly where are you talking in each state? The CA-TX route is quite popular with shippers. I would try to find a shipper that does the route often and see if they can include your stuff with another shipment so you're not paying too much for your sole shipment.

For instance, you might find a guy shipping a couple of cars from CA-TX and depending on the vehicle he's using to tow the trailer, he might be able to put some more boxes in his truck for a nominal fee.

This seems like a great idea.

San diego to austin or san antonio.

How do you find those types of shippers?

Since you say $500 is too much for a rental car, how are you getting yourself to TX ? Walking?

FYI, to ship a 50 pound box, 10"x10"x20", from LA to San Antonio is about $60, via UPS. Figure just over $1 per pound for your 5-10 boxes.

Is your rental car starting to look better now, especially with the rabbit ?

BTW, shippers such as UPS cannot ship any mammals, such as rabbits.

You can always go to a UPS store and ask.
I'll be shipping two large boxes and computer to TX from MA.
The price came out reasonable.

Was thinking of using my miles for a free flight. I was planning on financing a new car when I got to Tx. It may be better to finance it here in CA and just drive that instead.
