Hello,

my lease is over July 31st. I need to move to a new place in a new city after that. But at the same time, I am traveling to China for 1 and half months.

Because I am moving to more expensive city, the rent will be pretty high. I obviously need to leave my stuff and car somewhere.

What can I do?

1) Just get a storage space for a month and look for apartment when I am back.

2) Get an apartment and immediately try to sublease it to somebody somehow for the month.

3) Get an apartment and don't sublease it, thus, loosing one month rent.

What do you think it is the best way to do? Anyone been there done that?

Rent a storage unit ( be sure the unit will allow a car) or rent a small storage unit for stuff and get a covered RV storage for the car. Pay for 2 months. Then get the apartment when you get back.

There is a little issue with renting just a storage space .

I am here in the U.S. on visas and I always need to report change of address, and I need to keep a physical address. Basically a condition for anyone who isn't a citizen. If I have just a storage space I will be without physical address for several weeks.

I guess, it is not really enforced, but what could I do, to stay clear and clean with the immigration?

Can you put a deposit down on a new place but not start the lease for 4-6 weeks? Then you would have your new address but keep your belongings in storage until you get back; move in upon your return.

Can you go to a UPS office and get a private mailbox? The storage idea is a good one, depending on how far you're moving. Otherwise you may need to bite the bullet and pay rent for a couple extra months.
