Hey all was hoping for some cross country advice. Here are the details:

-Driving a Penske 12' truck from NYC to San Mateo.
- Will be myself and my girlfriend.
- Giving ourselves 5 days to complete journey but can spill over another day if needed.

I've prepped myself for the move and have the general tips down (aiming on driving only in the day time, not overdoing the drive, avoiding driving while sleepy etc.) but my question is more related to where should we stop for overnight. We are taking I80 the whole way and have a general idea where we want to stop each day but if any experienced cross country-ers could give where they think is the best towns to use as checkpoints that would be great.

Nights we will stay at hotels/good motels. Thanks in advance!

That is NOT a CC road trip. It's a utilitarian schlep.

National chain motels NEAR the interstate with larger and well lit parking lots.
20 miles outside of any real City... NOT in the city itself.

Which one really doesn't matter.

My only suggestion is a possible route change once you get to CA. Rather than take 80 ALL the way to the Bay Bridge and then down the peninsula my personal choice would be to head south on I-5 when reaching Sacramento. Then below Stockton take the 205 past Tracy, on to 580 in to the East Bay. Cross over to San Mateo via the San Mateo bridge.

H.ave a great trip, which ever routes and stops you chose. I hope that CA will be as great a place for you as it was for me for 32 years, (then I retired and became a country girl).
