Excellent thread, I must say-
I'm mid 40's & looking to be out of this Hell hole of a state before I'm 50.....
Ideally I'd love to do this within the next year-- it's all I can do to not pack it up now & take off......
Reading through threads like this keep me inspired

Put up a profile on a dating site (OK Cupid, Match, etc).
Use the word "relocate" a lot.
Find a person as well as a place.

Unless you have a job situation (pension etc) that requires you to stay put... don't.
Even if you do... check out the math of the money involved.

My six year aniversary of moving was over Labor day Weekend. It was funny that I'd wanted out of the city for such a long time and always thought mountains along the coast somewhere. But then visited a friend here, found out the prices were cheap and I liked the feel. It was mostly the feel over all the rest. I did a lot of longing for without plans, but since my friend said I should consider the place had made plans to look I had already started the 'planning'. But my lease on my apartment ended up four months shorter, due to some irriguarity in bookeeping the new owners found, so I had three months to figure out how I was going to move, and be packed. The apartment was small so after I'd filled up the available space with boxes, I had to hold off to just before going. Our biggest worry was the work on the house wouldn't be done in time. Wasn't quite but we only did the motel for a week.

I was mid fifties. Its funny how I feel much less old here than there. Turned 62 this year.

If you have the means and are miserable, then find a way. All you have to lose is your misery.

Best wishes, Ohio residents!

Don't let SAD wear you out this year. Walk outside and use those light boxes or tanning beds so that you have enough energy to move in March or whenever.

It wasn't across the country, but since 50, I've moved from north Texas back to Missouri (home state), then in 2010, I moved to Houston where my son lives. The winter in MO was brutal before I moved...at least you don't have to shovel heat (although it can be oppressive here.
