My adult moves were based on following jobs, it is pretty easy to transfer in the federal government and your pension, etc. follows you. Some moves were based on 'realignment' or 'reorganizations' and some just to get a new opportunity.
But why? Does your job transfer you around? Millitary?
No, my Wife and I are just addicted to moving, I guess. We love living in new states, and had the means to move around. To be fair, some of those moves were in-state. But, that takes a toll on you and we are settled now, but in too much house. So we are planning to go into another smaller house for retirement.
I did these in less then 6 months when I was 22 years old. Milw to Mpls, Mpls to Ft Collins, Ft Collins to Mpls, Mpls to Anchorage. Reasons were, leaving college, going back to Colorado to live, and a friend offering a dream opportunity in Anchorage. I jumped around a bunch in college and now I'm back in MN where I was born. I got my travel living out of my system in early 20's, though I always have a want to move to a mountain home on a stream in Colorado or Northern California or just to San Francisco some day in our future.
I'm surprised no one has yet raised the issue of what constitutes a "relocation". Does moving five miles within the same city count? Technically it's a different location, but one could presumably continue to use the same auto repair facility, barber/beauty salon, and various other trusted tradespeople such as plumber. Probably the grocery shopping location would change, of course.
In addition to the major relocations (St. Louis to Los Angeles to Louisiana to Germany to Los Angeles), I have moved nine times within the greater Los Angeles area, from as little as a mile or so to about 20 miles. I am 70.
My last move, 14 years ago, was about 10 miles, just far enough to require a change in almost all shopping venues, eateries, movie theatres, barbers, etc. (Sure, I could have driven 10 miles to my old barber, but that didn't make sense to me). So if re-establishing oneself like that counts as a relocation, O.K. But, I am still within the same general culture, that of the greater Los Angeles area and I still get the same newspaper, the Los Angeles Times, on my doorstep each morning. I did not have to re-learn the layout of the freeway system in order to get around. Lots of stuff remained familiar.
Dad was a lifer in the military...shortest time at an installation was 10 months, longest was 2 years. When he retired we continued the tradition for many years....as an adult I moved around alot. I've finally gotten rid of the urge to move and set down roots. Maybe more move to make within my current state and that's it.
