Hi all,

I'm taking a trip from Massachusetts to Kentucky next week. A big part of this trip is bringing a marble statue to a friend. I wanted to wrap the statue in towels and put it in my big bag (not the carry on). Should it be safe? Will airplane security give me a tough time about it? I'm actually more concerned about the latter question as I know how tough airplane security can be.

I wouldn't.

The way they throw those bags around...........it'll probably get damaged.

Ship it ahead of time. UPS will wrap and ship. Less stress for you. On the other hand, I have shipped delicate glass objects, a large bag of them with nary a scratch. I used bubble wrap, lots of bubble wrap.

Absolutely ship FedEx, UPS. Count on TSA and the airport workers to damage it. If you try to ship it in a box as a carry on, they will open it.

You can ship it air freight as air freight shippers have different systems, but if you are going to that much effort, just use UPS, etc

I recommend UPS as well. And lots and lots of bubble wrap. I've had success with them and breakable items.

I actually already got back from my trip and ended up taking the marble with me in the bag. It actually did not get scratched at all! I should mention that I was VERY careful about how I packed the marble. It was a two piece statue so I put each piece in its own cardboard box. Before I did that that though I also wrapped the marble in a TON of bubble wrap each. The cardboard boxes were small so they had very little wiggle room and I also threw in some small bits of clothing (I think mostly just socks) to make sure the boxes were packed. After that I wrapped each box in a winter coat.
