If you don't want to buy a wardrobe box, I recommend the use of large trash bags (33 gallon size) with the ties already attached. We've moved 2 kids back and forth to college a number of times over the last few years. We gather 10-15 hangers and clothes together, tie the hangers together with string or a rubber band, and then slip the group of clothes into the trash bag. We've also cut a hole in the bottom of the bag and slipped the hangers through it.
we moved back to WI from SC, and as we had a couple trucks (uhaul) worth of goods we tried to keep the boxes as common in size as possible which really helped the stacking (and for storage as well). We just used the same boxes for our clothes, left them on hangers and folded over in groups switching direction in the box to fill it up easier.
I have to say, with everything that has to be done for both packing and un-packing in a major move, being able to take some boxes to a closet and just hang the clothes up is a nice little time saver
Wardrobe boxes! I used them for at least 20 years after my last move (and most were used then from previous moves). They're about 30 inches wide, have the bar that goes across, and they can be sealed air tight. We'd throw shoes and misc in the bottom, because the clothes don't normally go all the way to the bottom and because a little weight in the bottom keeps them from being top heavy. They're easy to move with a 2-wheeled movers' cart, and they also have "handles" to move them without a cart. If you have a spare room or basement, you can continue using them; if not you can break them down flat and use them later.
I use contractor bags because they are thicker. I put suits into a suit bag and move the rest of the clothes on hangers in contractor bags. I use clothes to fill in spaces when I'm packing a truck or relo cube. If someone else were paying for the move, I'd probably use a wardrobe box, but I'm generally moving myself and the bags are lighter and a better fit.
We moved last year, did like Ranger. Big box, folded on hangers.
