I've given stuff away on both Freecycle and Craigslist.
With both of them, you have people cruising around checking both sites for free stuff that they can pick up right away to try to resell. With Freecycle, I got a ridiculous amount of emails wanting whatever I was giving away, but Craigslist is much easier if the items are just put outside with "Free" on it.
Another way is to put it in an alley if you live near one.
I've used Craigslist, and i just say it's outside the apartment, etc., and check every couple hours so I can remove the post when the items are gone. Everything had disappeared within hours.
Around here many use a web site called nextdoor dot com. you have to sign up and it's just people in your area. People post free stuff all the time and there are usually several that want it - the "giver" states it's on the porch, in the alley or at the curb and it disappears.
Anything I have put on CL's free section that has had any value has gone. This would include an old mattress that was still in decent shape, a record player that didn't work and bunch of truck rims with old worn out tires on them.
