My family and I are planning a 1700+ mile move. I am driving truck, they are flying and meeting me there.
On Penkse website it has 22FT DIESEL truck quoted LOWER at $878.33 compared to the 16FT GAS truck quote at $883.88 (one way, unlimited miles move). My 3 bedroom apt should fit in the 16FT truck, so either one works size wise...
Anyone know WHY the bigger DIESEL truck would be cheaper and WHY someone might take the smaller truck?
It "claims" the DEISEL gets "50 gal. diesel fuel tank (up to 10 mpg)" and on the GAS truck it claims - "37 gal. gasoline fuel tank (up to 12 mpg)"
Anyone do a trip or comparison or know from any sort of experience/knowledge which truck would be the most cost effective ?
If the rental is the same, my first thought was go bigger truck with DIESEL.. but when I look at the MPG, now I don't know...
Penske diesels are smooth running trucks. Yes, diesel is more expensive, but has better torque. Now, as to size, more room is always better as it virtually always takes more space than you estimate.
A few potential reasons:
1. Fleet utilization. They could be overstocked on 22ft trucks in your area and trying to move them out, or understocked at your destination..
2. Intimidation factor. Some people might scared off by the bigger truck so demand is lower.
3. Transmission type? Several years ago I rented a truck from enterprise and they wanted to give me a 22ft manual (not sure if it was diesel) when I reserved a 16ft auto at a discount. I didn't bite since because I didn't want to deal with the manual or bigger truck when I didn't need it.

Thanks! Very helpful tip - Make sure when reserving you ask "manual or automatic." I wouldn't have thought to ask, thanks!

Weird thing is the bigger Diesel truck is cheaper... Has bigger fuel tank and only gets a few less miles per gallon.. Guess I'm goin Diesel!
Diesel engines are inherently more efficient. I would almost bet the diesel will get better mileage under heavy load. There is a reason that all 18 wheelers are diesel.

I was driving a Penske with DT466 diesel loaded HEAVY and towing a trailer with car. I got the SAME mileage (12 - 14 mpg) as them (driving a 12v Cummins pickup with a camping trailer).
The following month a drove a Budget diesel 2700 miles (v-8 fuel pincher). It got 6-8 mpg and was a dog. On a 'soggy' GM chassis, so very unstable in WY cross winds.
