My lease is up at the end of December and I will be moving to coastal North Carolina from upstate New York. However, I can't decide whether to sign a six month lease and move during the summer or whether to just move in January.
For those that have moved during winter, how bad was it? I'm going to be using ABF for the move. I am undecided about flying or driving.

Upstate NY roads can get pretty bad in January and February. It would not be on my list of times to be trying to move. PA and several of the northern states you'll drive through are not going to be much better. If you fly, you might have delays due to weather problems.

I would rethink trying to move from the north during that time period. It really isn't a sensible idea. Granted you might get 2-3 high pressure days in a row where the weather is clear but cold, but do you really want to take a chance of moving during a blizzard or when there's a -10 cold snap?

Moved once when it was about -10. We were doing the work ourselves and as long as we kept moving, it wasn't too bad. Of course I was 25 years old then. Might not be so happy today. Moved another time in January. Got a beautiful day with temps above average. A couple weeks later a neighbor moved in a blizzard. It's a crap shoot.
