I have several rolling suitcases that I would like to pack items in. I'll be moving cross country, next spring, and using a professional moving company. Will professional movers accept packed suitcases in lieu of packed boxes? I'll be doing all of the packing myself. Thank you for your input.

Years ago, the moving company accepted our hardsided luggage with stuff packed inside.

Can't say about today's softsided stuff.

My last move......I used all my softsided luggage for the stuff which was going with me in the car. Stuff I did not want the movers to handle.

I'm going to say yes. As long as whatever is inside is packed as safely as it would be in a box and doesn't weigh more than a box, the movers won't care. Just be aware that the odd shape of suitcases mean they can get stuffed into voids between boxes or furniture.

Moving trucks can be dirty. If you have light-color luggage and room in the car (assuming you're taking a car), you might want to consider putting them in the truck or back seat, if that's doable.

Yes, my son recently moved across the country. He packed a suitcase full of off season clothes in a suitcase. The movers didn't even question it.

What movers prefer ... but from me they never got :-) ... is to leave drawer items as is, especially when it comes to bureaus. That's the only time movers have mentioned packed suitcases, if I've emptied drawers into them. But no way would I leave my "unmentionables" in a drawer. Nor did I ever leave desk drawer items as is. Some furniture pieces get packed on their sides, and that creates a mess. However, movers do prefer that luggage is packed with something rather than being empty.

You can pack your items in whatever you want. Moving companies do not provide insurance on customer packed boxes, bags, or even suitcases.

I have gotten 3 estimates on my move, and have asked every one about this suitcase question, and each one has said yes, suitcases can be moved full. Fill the suitcases with clothes if they are soft sided. Hard shell suitcases can also take other stuff that is more breakable, but not really fragile things, that should be appropriately packed in double sided boxes.
