Hello everyone! My DH and I are planning on relocating south within the next 18 months. Since this is a semi-retirement move, we are going to sell our home, take the cash and buy a home in our new location for cash once we get there. We have owned /moved 3 houses since we married, so "stuff" is not a problem.
What has me stumped is my beloved dogs!

Just curious, did anyone make a long distance move without permanent housing secured in advance AND bring pets? How did that work out? Any tips on making it easier?

Thanks!

Moved from Ohio to Washington state with our dog last year. We planned the route out with stops at La Quinta Inns which are pretty nice and have a welcoming pet policy. No additional deposit or fee like other hotels.

As for landing in the new place you may need to use a doggy day care or kennel them while you shop for the house as even in La Quinta you are not supposed to leave them in the room by themselves. I would hit up the vet and get required kennel vaccinations before you leave just in case.

May I suggest going on a house hunting trip while leaving the dogs with a close friend or relative, buy the house and then come back for the dogs.

I moved from WV to Montana 6 years ago. House stuff went into a moving van, the wife, 2 kids and 2 dogs piled into the Jeep Grand Cherokee and we had a regular old National Lampoon family vacation trek across the U.S.

You tied the dogs to the back and drove away...

Poor little guy, probably kept up with you for a mile or so...

You should've seen the hotel guests faces when they saw us walk in a blue tick coon hound, lol.

We spent several weeks in a Residence Inn with our dog. It wasn't ideal, but we have a Golden Retriever, and she seemed to enjoy the extra attention.

We had a 13 hour drive for our last move, and the entire time it was in torrential rain. We looked for banks with drive through lanes, which worked out perfectly for letting our dog out of the car to pee and eat( we drove on a Sunday). Her bed took up the back seat, and the rest of the time she was content to sleep.
