I will move from Ithaca to NYC with around 10 luggage pieces and boxes at the end of this month.

I have not driven a car since I got my license almost a decade ago, and I don't have any experience of driving on a road with traffic (including highway).

If I drive a rented van, SUV or a U-Haul 10' truck by myself, is it sufficient for me to:

- read the NY's drivers' manual (https://dmv.ny.gov/driver-license/dr...practice-tests), to be familiar with rules and signs.

- read How to Drive a Car (with Pictures) - wikiHow, to be familiar with how to drive a car

- maybe rent a car to practice a few hours?

Currently I have questions such as:

- Can I drive slowly even on highways, by staying on the rightmost lane?

- Can I stop by the side of a road (including highways) any time, if I want to relax or figure out the route?

Thanks for your suggestions and advice.

Driving through Ithaca is one thing, through NYC...very risky. Start practicing now and forget the "How to drive" online course. You need actual road time and to even consider driving in NYC traffic is silly. You'll be better off taking the bus or train. Why haven't you driven in 10 years? How is that even possible?

Thanks.

I walk, take public transportation such as buses, or find rideshare services online.

But every time I move, I feel I need to practice driving.
Now I am also looking for a ride service.

You can ship your stuff via Greyhound or Amtrak and take a bus. No driving and probably cheaper.

Why put that kind of pressure on yourself?

U-Haul are 10 times as difficult to drive as a regular car I would just pay to have my stuff moved and take a bus or plane.

Yes. Also, NYC has rules about which roads trucks can drive on, where they can park... Make sure you obey those. I'd try to rent a van if possible, since they are easy to drive. If you get it 1 day before, you should get familiar with how to turn, how the braking is...

Also, if possible get into NYC at an off time. There will be less cars on the road and it will be much easier for you.

Agreed^^^

Last year I rented a Uhaul after several months of no driving at all. Uhauls are VERY unpleasant to drive. Every bump in the road jars right through your bones, so just imagine the beating your furniture takes. Uhaul may be convenient & easy to rent, but the driving experience is just awful.

If possible, hire a moving company with their own truck to do the driving for you ESPECIALLY because you haven't driven in ten years, and you're attempting to conquer New York City
