I'm 38 years old. I've done two out of state moves in the past two years. I have a wife and small child. It's really not a big deal anymore. People will move where there is the best career opportunity, or just for a change of scenery, for hobbies or recreational opportunities, or to experience something different. People aren't as bound to their jobs as they used to be, and technology allows many people to work from home or almost anywhere. If somebody wanted to give me a 50% raise and promotion to go work in Cleveland, I'd do it even if I didn't intend to stay long term because it would allow me to save for retirement/financial independence much faster, which in turn would allow me to ultimately find that place I will want to end up more permanently.

Why weren't you able to secure comparable employment in OH after being fired? Columbus is booming relative to Hartford, et al.

My rent going up sky high caused me to locate from California to Washington when I was 45. That's the third relocation I've done in my life, relocating to a place where I didn't know anyone. Twice those relocations have been to out of state areas.

My family has several who have moved after 40, 50 and even 60. There were various reasons. To be near kids who'd moved, retirement, to try out a different climate and culture... etc. Who cares what anybody thinks... Live your life!

People relocate all the time, different ages, different reasons. Lots of people, with kids, families and great careers move for better weather, better schools, better housing or simply- cause life is short and they want new and different experiences. If you aren't satisfied with where you live and you have no ties- move till you find "home"!

I was actively looking for employment in the Columbus area as a local candidate! I had interviewed with three different companies and NONE of them made an offer to me. After four months of looking, I finally got a job offer from a company in Hartford, CT, so I relocated.

I relocated to the southwest,in my 40s, after my kids all graduated highschool. Best decision I ever made, I was the happiest I have ever been. Unfortunately, my husband didn't care for the desert and now I am back in Indiana.

What are some reasons that someone over the age of 35 might relocate, whether voluntary or involuntary? Do you think 35+ is too old to relocate? Do you think if someone relocates over the age of 35, it means that they "failed" at life?

You should post this in the retirement forum.

Why shouldn't people relocate at any age if they choose to?I've moved around a fair amount and plan too again a time or two before I die.

My kids are adults now,if I could afford it i'd move somewhere new every couple of years just to experience different places.

Huh? That's completely absurd. Why would anyone think that??
