As OP have stated get rid of stuff you really don't need. AFA the couch and other furniture, put them on the curb.

Go get lids for the boxes. Not a big deal. Or just get new boxes. Also not a big deal. If you don't want to spend a lot of time trying to find this stuff, then spend twenty bucks to buy boxes at a store. Still not a big deal.

Move everything at once. The boxes will be the easiest and quickest things the movers move, maybe 5 to 10 minutes total, even if you don't have lids. Your dog will be fine.

A. Get movers strictly for the heavy and/or large items. I figure this would be 60-90 minutes each way.

I'm trying to figure out what you mean here- (when you say each way) You're only paying for the movers to take and drop your stuff off- so why are you saying each way?

Take a critical look at the new apartment. Anything that won't be needed there should be gotten rid of now. Do you need two AC units for the new place? Don't most apartments have central AC?

I would want to move everything at once. Once you decide to hire movers, doing the whole thing won't cost much more.

I'd try to decide what I could live without. If you haven't worn it in over a year????? or used it in awhile and think you may never. As far as boxes, seal with tape. I had a friend that left his watch on the table when the movers came in for an estimate. When they left the watch was gone.

In San Diego, most place don't even have a/c, because it's not necessary. It's only necessary to the people that think it is. My fan works just fine.

When I move, I move everything that I can pick up myself. The movers only move the few pieces of furniture that I have, my milk crates with quarts of pain, my microwave, and my 5.0cuft freezer. This costs me $220.

You are essentially moving into a small hotel suite. That is the total amount of furnishing you need. Sell and give away all that extra stuff. Go through your clothing & be ruthless about pitching everythimg you have not worn in the last year.
