Homesick
For those that have moved from your hometown , do you ever feel at home somewhere else. We have moved about 7 hours away from my hometown, and I grew up in Mobile,Al all my life. I just wondered do you ever feel different or will you always feel your not at home?

I think it just takes time to adjust to a new place. I've been here almost 2 years now and still have not adjusted. Some people just take longer than others. It could help to get out and about to do things like activities, join clubs, make friends

I think when we get homesick, what we really long for is "the way it use to be". Well, it never will be that way again. I've been away from my hometown for 23 years and I would LOVE to go back...to the way it use to be when I was young. But I know even if I moved back, it wouldn't be the same. There is truth to that old adage, "you can't go home again". Fortunately, I love where we live now but I will always miss the home of my youth.

I did feel that after I got married and moved from MS to Ga where my dh was stationed in the Army. After he got out, we had choices to make on where to live and many areas came up, his childhood home for a while in SC was one we considered a lot because he had wonderful memories of there. In the end, we moved back home to our little piece of heaven. Lived in a nearby town while working and going to college. It was ok, but from experiencing living in town we decided we wanted to move out when we had children. I know, it was convenient but still didn't feel like 'home'. So, my dad gave us a piece of land and we built our home on it....that was 24 years ago and I am so very happy here. It felt like home the minute we laid the foundation.
Go where your heart is....and know that there are times when you can be happy somewhere else as long as you are open to change and happy with yourself.
We are planning a new home in the next couple of years, not too far from here, but getting out of the booming area a bit. The property we bought is beautiful and I know I can be happy living there. It has all the ingrediants for a beautiful yard and even has a small pond on it. I am making plans each day on how to fix that area up and what type house to build.
So, for me it was moving back to my roots, where our hearts were...we have never regretted it...

Good advice here. Get involved and have the attitude that the change is something that adds to your journey. Your home will always be your home. That will not be taken away from you. I had a terrible time when I moved and I wish I knew then what I know now. It is lonely and strange at first. It does indeed get better. Read something about culture shock--google it and see how one progresses through different stages. It is like going through the grief process. You are in stage two where the initial excitement has gone and you feel like a fish out of water. That will change.

We made big move a year ago and I still get homesick! Although where we live right now feels like home but then again it doesn't. Does that make sense? Feels like home because its where I live and where I lay my head down at night when I sleep. But not in the sense of this is where I want to be. I've made some good friends here but I miss my friends and family back home and everything else about my hometown. I'm counting down the days we move back and get out of here, lol.
