When we moved pods were a more expensive option due to the time it would take us to pack and unpack everything ourselves (with help from neighbors or family). We figured we would need them to be sitting there for at least two weeks on each end, probably three.
All said and done, our move cost us $33,000. INcluding the following:
1. Hire a mover to do some of the packing, all the loading and unloading, and the driving.
2. Fly wife and 5 kids (and cat and bird) to the new destination.
3. Rent a minivan and drive the remaining pets (two English mastiffs, tarantula, gecko) and other things that could not go into the moving truck or airplane.
4. Dispose of junk and hire someone to help with final cleaning.
6. Buy some cheap folding furniture/garage sale TV etc. to use while waiting for the truck to arrive.
7. Buy new items needed to replace things that either did not make the move (some furniture), were not worth moving (bicycles), we did not have/need at the original location (like coats and boots and sleds and ice skates), or which did not work in the new house, clean the rugs (this was surprisingly expensive).
8. Miscellaneous final and initial expenses to deal with the sold house on one end and a rental house on the other.
This was in 2005. Today the BS inflation calculator says it would be $41,000 today. If that is not BS than there is a number you could consider to move a large household.
Start looking at CL and see what it costs to replace all the stuff you are thinking about moving. Used furniture is worth just about nothing! And whatever you pay the big bucks to move will arrive with scrapes and dings it didn't have before. Plus what fit great in your old home probably won't go well in the new one. Think real hard about this!
Thank you everyone! These are really helpful! We decided to send the kids to FL to be with my parents so they won't be around for all the frustrating/stressful parts of the move! I am going to call PODS again to see how much it will cost for at least 2 PODS. When we moved to ID with one large POD but we didn't have our king size bedroom set or the kids heavy bunk beds. This will give us a better price range I hope. I've called a few movers to help with the big items and I am still waiting to hear back from them. We figure with driving with our animals it will take us between 2-3 days. We aren't in a rush but we also don't want to be on the road forever (took 4 1/2 days to drive from FL to ID with 3 kids & 4 adults - never again!)
If you can fit all your stuff into a box truck, moving can be done for little more than the price of gas.
If you absolutely must move your vintage 2010 living room set from Ashley Furniture Warehouse and your winter coat collection for sentimental reasons, it will cost you quite a bit more.
Moved from 600 miles (3 states away) in 2012. Used 2 pods at $900 each while in the process of remodeling the "new to us" house and to minimize (for staging) the home we lived in for 23 years. The final price for the "big move" was $5500 for the remaining furniture, clothing, household furnishings, bikes and 2 appliances. I sold a few pieces of furniture before the move, since I knew it wasn't going to work in the new house. Husband drove 1 car out, flew home and then we drove the 2nd car, 2 dogs and the plants out a few days later.
How much should you budget? I would say at minimum $10,000. If you know this is going to be a year process, you might want to look at freight shipping (slower but less $$) and possibly renting space for your items to reduce your poundage on the final move. If a family member can help with the coordination at the Rochester end it might be an option to ship items like out of season clothing, holiday decorations, other items that you won't need for a few months during the transition.

Get rid of everything that you don't need, and can be replaced.
I plan to do this.
